All carbs are not bad. If you are managing diabetes or even healthy weight, it is important to know the difference between them! Generally speaking, processed foods go on the bad carb list - that includes bleached flour, white sugar and many breads... let's call them FACTORY FOODS. These foods went through a lot of steps between the farm and your table. Whole foods are good for you! They digest more slowly without spiking blood sugar and contain important vitamins and minerals... we'll name them FARM FOODS. These are foods that you can still recognize as a plant. This includes brown breads that contain seeds and grains you can see. Many fall vegetables like sweet potatoes, butternut squash and pumpkin are naturally sweet but still make the good carbs list. Nuts and seeds, beans, apples and other fiber filled fruits are also good carbs. Beware of some of tricky exceptions - white potatoes and all types of corn will become sugar when your body digests them! Even as whole foods, they may cause your blood sugar level to rise too much. Dairy foods contain natural sugar called lactose - but low fat dairy products are good for you as long as they don't have added sugar. To learn more, read this:
